Third-generation computers:1964-1971
The integrated circuit replaces the transistors and made the third generation. Transistors became smaller and placed on semiconductors. This resulted in the increased of speed and efficiency on the computer. Unlike the first two generations, the third generation computers had keyboards, monitors and interfaced with an operating system. This made it possible to run different programs at one time. People were more attracted to these types of computers because they were better and cheaper.
1. UNIX
It stands for Unix. This was a multi-tasking computer operating system. It was created by AT&T Bell Labs by a number of people in 1969. There are many different types of Unix systems used today. It was created by a project that several companies tried to do but failed. The AT&T Bell Labs decide to redo the project at a much smaller scale and created the UNIX.
2. HP-2115
This was part of the HP 2100 series. It was created by Hewlett-Packard Company in 1966. This computer was usually the best when it came to arithmetic.
3. PDP-8
This computer succeeded the PDP-1. It was produced by the Digital Equipment Corporation in 1965. This computer became the first-successfully commercial minicomputer. The sold in numbers because of the cost, size, and the speed in the computer.
Ken Thompson
He was born on February 4, 1943. He attended the university of California and got his master's degree and Bachelor of Science. In the 1960's, he paired up with Dennis Ritchie to work on the Multics. After Bell Labs withdrew from that project, they use the ideas from the Multics to make the Unix. Ken Thompson now works at Google as a Distinguished Engineer to this day.
